Muslim world condemns Israeli minister’s entry into Al-Aqsa mosque as “flagrant violation”

The visit of Israel’s national security minister to the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in Jerusalem has drawn harsh criticism from the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and other organizations of Muslim nations.

The OIC deemed the Israeli minister’s visit to the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound a provocative act against all Muslims and a flagrant disregard for pertinent international agreements.

The Saudi Foreign Ministry described it as an Israeli official’s provocative action a statement. Saudi Arabia reiterated in the statement its steadfast commitment to supporting all initiatives aimed at putting an end to Israel’s occupation of Palestine, as well as its stand with the Palestinian people.

The United Arab Emirates and China, on the other hand, have requested a meeting of the UN Security Council in response to recent events at the Al Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem.

In the meantime, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, secretary-general of the Arab League, strongly denounced the entry of a representative of the new Israeli government into Al-Aqsa Mosque while it was being guarded by its security forces, viewing it as an attack on the Muslim community’s primary direction of prayer (Qiblah).

In a statement, Aboul Gheit noted that this blatant intrusion coincides with the start of Benjamin Netanyahu’s government’s implementation of its extremist program and settlement agenda, with all the potential consequences that this program may have for escalating the situation in Al-Quds (Jerusalem) and the other occupied territories.
